Iris Care Group Staff win at The Great British Care Awards

Iris Care Group Staff win at The Great British Care Awards

We are delighted to announce that 3 of our staff members have won awards at The Great British Care Awards, following an amazing result at the finalist stage where 15 members of staff, Beechwood College’s Laurel Home Team, and one of the people we support were made finalists.

We are so proud of all of this year’s winners and finalists, and all of us at Iris Care Group are looking forward to cheering them on at the National Finals. Learn more about our winners below!

Patrick McMahon – The Frontline Leaders Award

Pat is the Deputy Manager at Wentwood Court, one of our residential homes that provides support for people with learning disabilities and mental health needs.

Having worked in social care for over 20 years, Pat understood how daunting it could be to join a service as a new staff member. To help new starters at Wentwood feel confident and comfortable in their new roles, Pat has taken on the task of personally mentoring every new staff member that joins the Wentwood team.

With Pat’s tailored induction package he supports new staff members to get to know Wentwood Court and understand the principles of PBS and Active Support, and provides advice and guidance to help them find their feet.

Pat has also done an incredible job of improving access to the Motability Scheme for the people he supports. Whilst many of the people at Wentwood were eligible for the scheme, difficulties with the application process were discouraging and uptake was low.

After researching the scheme and building his knowledge, Pat has become a champion for the Motability Scheme, working with Local Authority teams to apply to the scheme for the people he supports. Pat has also been working closely with Motability to help them develop a greater understanding of the needs of people with learning disabilities, with the goal of improving the scheme and offering a wider range of adaptation options.

As a result of Pat’s efforts, 7 of the individuals he supports have now received specially adapted Motability vehicles, improving their access to the community and enabling them to visit their friends and family more often.

Tammy Rees – The Registered Manager Award

Tammy is the Registered Manager at Ty Brynteg, which is another one of our residential homes that offers support for people with learning disabilities and mental health needs.

The Ty Brynteg team nominated Tammy for her kindness, compassion, and incredible leadership that has led to the home being so successful. They said that Tammy is always going above and beyond for the team and the people she supports, and that both professionally and personally, Tammy is someone that the team can always trust and rely on.

One staff member said

“I have worked in mental health for over a decade, and have to say that out of all the managers I have worked with, Tammy has definitely been the most caring and compassionate.”

The team also shared how inspired they were by the exceptional support that Tammy has provided to an individual at Ty Brynteg who has been struggling with long-term renal complications.

Tammy made it her mission to educate the team on the condition, and ensure that they were fully-equipped with all of the knowledge and training they needed to enable them to provide the right care and support.  Tammy also helped the individual develop a greater understanding of their condition, and has encouraged them to take a more active role in managing it.

With Tammy’s support, this individual has gained a much more positive outlook on their life and future with this condition.

Catherine Sweeney – The Ancillary Worker Award

Catherine – lovingly known as Cat – led an extensive career in social care, healthcare, and social housing before joining Iris Care Group in 2022 as a Tenancy Liaison Officer.

Throughout her career Cat learned about the different complexities that can impact housing and benefits, and realised that with her experience, she could provide a unique type of support for people with complex needs with her transferable skillset and extensive knowledge of healthcare, housing, and benefits.

Cat now supports the people in our Supported Living services to confidently manage their tenancies and make informed decisions about their housing and finances, develop financial literacy, and tackle unresolved debt and underpaid benefits.

Beyond supporting the people in our services Cat has also been supporting our staff, and she went above and beyond for one staff member who unfortunately suffered a stroke this year.

As an overseas worker, the staff member was struggling to navigate a complicated and unfamiliar healthcare and housing system alone after their stroke. Cat jumped straight in to advocate for them and find medical care and housing support, drawing from her previous experience and specialist knowledge to help them access the support that they were entitled to.

With Cat’s assistance the staff member gained secure, stable accommodation that was more suited to their changing health needs, and the appropriate medical care they needed for their recovery.

And the good news doesn’t stop there…

It’s been a fantastic start for Iris Care Group following our merger earlier this year. Our Chair and Chief Executive, Peter Kinsey, won this year’s Social Care Top 30 Award, and we are delighted to announce that we are hosting our first annual Iris Care Group Staff Awards in December!

Keep an eye on our website and social media channels for more information about our Staff Awards – we’re looking forward to sharing all of the special things our team have achieved this year with the people we support.
