Therapies

Where students have agreed therapeutic funding the College can provide access to a wide range of therapies and medical support that seek to promote skill development and remove barriers to learning.

After a full assessment of individual needs our Multi-Disciplinary Team not only deliver personalised therapeutic plans but form close working partnerships with staff, parents and carers to ensure that the recommended therapeutic techniques can be embedded at home to maximise the therapeutic effect.

Our therapeutic specialisms include:

  • Speech and Language Therapy (SALT)
  • Occupational Therapy (OT)
  • Clinical Psychology
  • Psychiatry
  • Dietetics
  • Physiotherapy

Positive Behavioural Support

We recognise that our students often have difficulties in expressing themselves and communicating distress or need. Communication can take the form of behaviours that are perceived as challenging. We work as a multidisciplinary team to meet students’ needs by developing a person-centred Positive Behavioural Support (PBS) plan.

Our PBS plans are based upon an assessment of the potential reasons for specific behaviours. As well as making sure that we understand what upsets a student, we also seek to understand what the student enjoys and the skills that they already possess to cope with situations they find difficult.

The subsequent PBS plan uses this information to support staff to maintain a consistent focus on improving the student’s skills and communication, thus assisting them in reducing the need to engage in behaviours that challenge and improving their ability to interact positively.

Lego Therapy

Lego Therapy

Some of the students take part in fun Lego-based therapy groups run by the Speech and Language team. This therapeutic approach aims to develop social communication skills such as turn-taking, sharing, following rules and problem-solving. It is also a good opportunity to expand and expose students to new vocabulary.
