Senior Support Worker

What does your typical day involve?

Most of my day is spent supporting service users with day-to-day tasks, the sorts of things we all do – making a cup of tea, going to the shops, doing the laundry. It’s not about doing things for them, it’s about helping them to build their confidence and skills – preparing them for a time when they’ll be able to live independently.

What’s the best bit about your job?

There’s nothing better than watching a service user’s mental health and independence improve under your care. Plus the team at Overndale where I’m based works really well together – we all get on, we have a laugh and you know everyone‘s there to help you when you need it.

What’s the best bit about working for Ludlow Street Healthcare?

For me it’s the professional development. I know of lots of staff who have come in with little or no experience in the care field, and with the training and management support – and of course the willingness to work hard themselves – they have been able to progress into more senior roles really quickly.

What are the service users like?

Sometimes they are challenging, but our service users are a wonderful group who really appreciate the support we give them as they work to improve their circumstances.

What qualities do you think someone needs to work as a Support Worker?

To be a good Support Worker you need to be compassionate, understanding, empathetic, and importantly patient. Change is gradual – it takes place slowly and over time – and therefore you need to be prepared to be there with each individual on their journey.
