Speech & Language Therapist - Newly Qualified

What does your job involve?

I’m involved with assessing and creating communication plans for new students at Beechwood College where I work. I identify areas where we can help the student improve their communication skills.

Some of our students are non-verbal so for them it may be suggesting visual tools which can help them interact and express their needs.

I also run regular therapy sessions with the students as well as providing training and guidance for the education and care team on how they can adapt the ways they teach and interact with the students to provide the most effective support.

Why did you join Ludlow Street Healthcare?

I joined straight from college. I really liked the idea of working with young adults in an education setting as I felt there would be a real opportunity for my work to have immediate and tangible benefits for the students

I had also heard from my lecturers that Beechwood College is a really supportive environment and that they were big on staff training which, given that I’m just starting out on my career, was really important to me.

What’s the best part of your job?

It’s so great to see your ideas being out into action; to see them being used by both the students and the staff that support them.

But best of all it’s seeing how quickly the practices you have suggested can make such a positive impact on a student’s ability to engage in the education process and to have better and more enjoyable interaction with their carers, families and everyone they meet.
